Based on the 1992 Alasdair Gray novel, ‘Poor Things’ is a black comedy fantasy directed by Yorgos Lanthimos with a screenplay written by Tony McNamara. James and Shona Heath were chosen to co-design the monumental project, bringing together their creative ideas and inspirations to create a new and exciting world.

Starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Vicki Pepperdine, Ramy Youssef and Mark Ruffalo, the film explores the evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist as she embarks on a whirlwind adventure across the continents with a debauched lawyer.

Development on the film began as early as 2019, but the film ultimately premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in 2023 where it won the Golden Lion. Since its release, the film has been nominated in numerous awards categories, and at the start of 2024 James and Shona were awarded both the The Art Directors Guild Award for ‘Excellence in Production Design for a Fantasy Film’, the BAFTA award for ‘Best Production Design’ and the Oscar for ‘Best Production Design’.
